The rain has passed, the winds have died down and Hurricane Ophelia has dragged in warm air from sunnier climes. So with the mild weather upon us, it seemed like the perfect day to venture out to our local National Trust property and have an awesome autumnal day at their Pumpkin Festival. The event takes place along their Play Trail so you will need to pay for House & Gardens entry (currently £9.70 for adults, £4.85 for kids, £24 for a family) to get access, but of course it's free for NT members. Following the trail, you'll find several stations with different activities available - a leaf pit to leap into, fire pits to toast your marshmallows (50p per bag), 'Pumpkin' space hoppers, a space to create wild art from the natural materials found around you, a pop-up cafe and themed shop and of course the main event...the Pumpkin Carving station. Now, prices for the pumpkins here are £3 for a medium pumpkin and £4 for a large but it doesn't mention anywhere on the website that you can't bring your own! So armed with our 50p pumpkins from Asda, we found a free station and set about carving scary faces into our pumpkins. With pulp covering their hands, faces, clothes and basically anything else that was in the vicinity, I was glad that this uber messy activity was taking place in the great outdoors as far away from my home furnishings as possible! I would recommend taking wipes, tissues, water, a bag to put all bulky coats in while you're doing the activity and a bag to carry the finished product home. The trail also has lots of wooden play structures and rope swings to play on so you can definitely spend a good few hours here. And, when you're finished outdoors, take a visit inside the house (included in your admission price) to marvel at the beautiful interior while the kids go in search for mini pumpkins hidden in the rooms.
