FREE! Taking the helm at the Tall Ships Festival

This Easter weekend, a fleet of tall ships from around the world anchor up on the River Thames at Woolwich and Greenwich in preparation for the Tall Ship Regatta that will see them compete in a race to Portugal and beyond. But before they set sail for the high seas late on Sunday, visitors have the chance not only to board and explore the vessels (free at Woolwich, chargeable at Greenwich) but also enjoy free live music, demonstrations and performances on one of the stages at either location, street performers, food stalls, rides and activities - all part of the Festival's celebrations. The highlights for the kids today were having a go at the helm (or 'Captain's wheel' as they call it), boarding The Earl of Pembroke (featured in their much loved Alice in Wonderland films) and taking a short ride on the slightly less impressive albeit fun Thames Clipper from Woolwich down to Greenwich taking in the sights of Canary Wharf, the o2, the Royal Naval College and of course the most famous Tea Clipper of all - The Cutty Sark. I would definitely recommend a visit before the ships depart if you fancy some fantastic free floating fun this bank holiday weekend! Check out my calendar listing for links to more information.
